The phone is wonderful. It can add so much value to your radio programme. It can connect your listener with people and views they might not normally get the chance to hear. It can inform and educate. It can take your listener around the world. It builds community when listeners hear other listeners on air.

Think of ways to incorporate phone calls into your daily programme.

If a guest cannot make it into the studio, you can interview them by phone. If something is happening, you can take your listener right there. If a particular topic is of interest to your listeners, find an expert on that topic, and phone them up every week for a chat. Come up with ideas to get your listeners to phone in and be involved in the programme.

The bottom line? Using the phone on air – guess what – connects people with people!
